Word of the Day - 04/07/26

lithe

/laɪð/
(adj.): gracefully thin and bending and moving with ease
The lithe dancer effortlessly performed a series of intricate spins and leaps.

Word Origin

The word 'lithe' originates from Old English 'liþe', meaning 'gentle, soft, mild, meek'. This in turn comes from the Proto-Germanic root '*linthja-', which traces back to the Proto-Indo-European root '*lent-' meaning 'flexible'. The modern sense of 'supple, flexible' developed around the 13th century and became dominant by the 16th century, replacing the older meaning of 'gentle'.
