inexorable

/ɪn'ɛksərəbəl/
(adj.): impervious to pleas, persuasion, requests, reason
The judge's inexorable decision could not be swayed by the defendant's emotional appeal.

(adj.): not to be placated or appeased or moved by entreaty
The inexorable march of time continues regardless of our wishes.

Word Origin

The word 'inexorable' originates from Latin. It is formed from the prefix 'in-' meaning 'not' or 'without', the prefix 'ex-' meaning 'out' or 'thoroughly', and the verb 'orare' meaning 'to plead' or 'to pray'. Combined with the suffix '-abilis' (forming adjectives), 'inexorable' literally means 'not able to be pleaded out of' or 'not to be moved by entreaty'. It describes something that cannot be persuaded, stopped, or changed.

Words with similar origins include 'orator' (one who speaks or pleads, from 'orare'), 'oration' (a formal speech or prayer, from 'orare'), 'orison' (a prayer, from Latin 'orationem' which derives from 'orare'), and 'adore' (from Latin 'adorare', meaning 'to worship' or 'to address in prayer', also containing the root 'orare').

peregrinate      officious      viscous
canny      modicum      execrable
inexorable

See if you can remember all of this week's words! Here is a sentence that includes all seven, followed by a version that simplifies them to help you remember:

The canny traveler tried to peregrinate subtly, but an officious local, with an inexorable desire to impose his will, made the journey execrable, especially when he offered a viscous, unidentifiable soup, and refused to accept even a modicum of polite refusal.

The smart traveler tried to wander quietly, but a meddlesome local, with an unstoppable desire to impose his will, made the journey awful, especially when he offered a thick, unidentifiable soup, and refused to accept even a small amount of polite refusal.
